About Us

ANGELA T. HORTON, MACMHC, LPCC-S, NCC, CCMHC, CDCA

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor

It is a joy and a passion to help adults, adolescents, and couples have more fulfilling lives. I believe it is important to show people that you care by treating them with kindness and respect. I especially enjoy helping people who are survivors of trauma. I specialize in working with people suffering from depression, anxiety, the harmful effects of childhood neglect, emotional and sexual abuse. In addition, I am passionate about marriage and enjoy helping couples work through challenges in their relationship.

I am the founder of Speak Life Christian Counseling and Coaching, LLC, where our mission is to help you find hope, encouragement, and the strength to Begin to Live Again. I graduated with honors from Ashland Theological Seminary, with a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MACMHC). I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervision Designation (LPCC-S), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC) and a Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA) practicing in the State of Ohio. My memberships include the American Counseling Association (ACA), American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) and Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Counseling Academic & Professional Honor Society International.

My clinical experience includes working as an inpatient and intensive outpatient therapist at a mental health hospital where I counseled patients diagnosed with severe mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, stress-related disorders, personality disorders and psychotic disorders. I taught inpatient and outpatient psychotherapy groups to help patients and their families to better understand their diagnosis, to help them identify and utilize healthy coping skills in order to reduce clinical symptoms and to improve their overall mental health. My experience in private practice as a mental health counselor includes the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, personality and behavioral disorders, substance use disorders, stress-related disorders, and relationship issues for adults, adolescents, and couples. As a clinical supervisor, I train and mentor new counselors in best practices. I enjoy working with new clinicians to help them learn and implement professional behavior and competence, identify objectivity, consider ethical considerations in clinical care, and to implement and maintain good self-care.

I have over 20 years’ experience working in Christian church leadership. I have been the keynote speaker at various women's conferences and events. I have written and taught Bible studies for women, conducted leadership mentoring groups and training classes for diverse groups of people and served as a ministry leader and coach for single parents.

Taking the first step may be hard, but you don't have to continue to suffer.

One of my favorite authors once wrote “People grow when they’re loved.” As a
counselor, I sometimes feel like a gardener. My purpose is to see my clients’ needs,
help cultivate their strengths, weed and prune things that hinder growth, and water
generously with validation, empathy and encouragement. In practice, this is assessing
the problems, incorporating a strengths-based approach while identifying and working through resistance. It is my goal to help you feel supported and loved so that you may grow into the person you want to be.

Throughout my life, I have always felt a strong calling to see people who may have felt
invisible, to hear people who may have been silenced, and invite people in who may
have felt like an outcast. This calling led me to serve in different areas such as, mission trips, youth ministry and leading worship. In college, I was introduced to the field of counseling and changed my major because I knew that becoming a counselor was the right career path for me. This decision changed my life. I now feel so honored to sit across from people and listen to their stories. Being vulnerable and opening up to someone you do not know can be scary. My hope is that you will feel comfortable sharing with me, like we are having coffee on your back porch while talking through your story. I enjoy working with adolescents, young adults and adult clients. I treat people struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, stress disorders, behavioral and emotional disorders and relationship problems.

My role as a counselor is influenced by my Christian faith. I have learned skills such as, flexibility, patience, empathy, and perseverance and desire to incorporate this into my counseling sessions. I am currently a graduate student at the University of the Cumberlands earning a Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MACMHC). I have a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Professional Counseling with a Minor in Addictions (BA) from Southwestern Assemblies of God University. I have a Counselor Trainee (CT) license issued by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist Board. I am a member of the Ohio Counseling Association (OCA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA). I am married and my husband is a pastor.

COUNSELOR INTERN

Self Pay: $40

What I enjoy most about counseling is having the opportunity to help individuals “connect the dots.” I love assisting clients by helping them to plot their course from where they are now, to where they hope to be. I am incredibly passionate about serving adults, couples, families and young people who are struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, life challenges, men’s issues, relationships as well as pre-martial and marriage counseling.

I have served as a full-time pastor for nearly ten years and authored two books. In my pastoral role, I have provided individual counseling, pre-marital counseling, marriage counseling and grief counseling for people who are grieving or have suffered loss. I
have organized outreach events, community service and mentored youths and young adults. During this time, I have learned to be present with clients, actively listen to their stories, offer comfort, empathy, acceptance and unconditional love. I highly value authenticity. Authenticity helps to create an atmosphere for genuine therapeutic change which has been very rewarding.

As a lifelong Christian, my relationship with God informs every aspect of what I do, including my work as a professional counselor. I believe that scripture, prayer and faith coupled with excellence in clinical care can help to mitigate many of life’s challenges. As a Christian counselor, I believe my role is to join with my clients and gain insight from God in seeking the very best outcome for all of my clients. Furthermore, I hope that through my work as a mental health counselor, I will help to remove some of the stigmas associated with counseling and mental health.

I am a graduate student at the University of the Cumberlands earning a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MACMHC). I have a Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Andrews University and a Bachelor of Arts in Theology (BA) from Oakwood University. I have a Counselor Trainee (CT) license issued by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist Board. I am a member of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Counseling Academic & Professional Honor Society International and the American Counseling Association (ACA). I am married and have one child.

I have always had an interest in understanding human emotions and relationships but navigating through my own challenges has given me a real passion to serve others. I see counseling as a pathway that helps people discover their strengths and develop skills to better navigate difficult life circumstances. My hope is to build strong therapeutic relationships where my clients are heard, validated, and feel safe enough to share and process their emotions as well as explore questions about life. When clients are understood they become empowered toward the positive changes that they want to see in their lives.

For the last five years, I have worked as a campus minister where I serve and mentor international students. In this role, I have provided active listening, expressed empathy, shown compassion, provided support and encouragement for many who struggled with anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. As a counselor, I desire to help my clients use a systematic lens and a holistic approach to help them become more aware of personal beliefs, self-narratives, and the impact this may have in their lives and relationships. My approach is to integrate cognitive behavior therapy, family systems, strengths-based and play therapy into my sessions. I enjoy working with children, teens, adults, and couples who are working through depression, anxiety, grief, identity confusion, life adjustments, and relationship issues. I have cross-cultural experience and a special interest in working with international students, immigrants, and people who identify as third culture.

A quote from the Bible is to “...let your light shine before others.” I believe that I am called to use my God-given gifts to be a part of that shining light. For those who choose Christian counseling, I am happy to use scripture and prayer as powerful and effective tools during your counseling sessions. I am currently a graduate student at Liberty University earning a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (MACMHC) (current GPA: 4.0). I have a Counselor Trainee (CT) license issued by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist Board. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Minor in Accounting (BA) from The University of Texas at Austin. Although I speak English fluently, my first language is Chinese Mandarin. In addition to counseling, I enjoy running outdoors, exploring local parks, and playing tennis with friends.

Taking the first step may be hard, but you don't have to continue to suffer.
